Question
Hi there - I have an employee that became eligible for Medicare this year. She was told when she called that she must sign up for Part A. In doing so, she is no longer eligible to contribute to her HSA as part of our company's HDHP. She was not told that since she is currently working and covered under a group plan that she can delay enrollment until the "Special Enrollment Period". My question is how can she "unenroll" for now to allow her to get the benefit of contributing to the HSA until she retires and chooses to elect Medicare?
Answer
Hi Nora
Since Medicare would not be primary, it is kind of unusual for her having part A effecting your program. But is she wants to disenroll she can go to the local Social Security Office. But bear in mind that it may cause problems when she retires. Congress has all kinds of odd things in the programs they are considering.
