Question
I am a recent mastectomy patient, and I have switched insurances, to BCBSIL. My problem is this; the "In-network" plastic surgeon providers we have consulted with, are not at all as qualified in their work. And they are also 50 miles from my town. I can not afford to use someone out of network, but I don't feel comfortable using the ones that are in network. I am disappointed, and unsure of what to do. Is it possible to still receive an in network approval for an out of network specialist? And how would I do that? Any help is greatly appreciated.
Answer
Hi Dianna!
Yes sometimes you can get approval for an out of network specialist. However usually not a simple task. You need to prove why you can not stay in the network. I would think traveling 50 miles may help you.
Worth a shot on trying. First find a plastic surgeon that you want to use that is close and then call BCBS and ask for if you could get an authorization for this provider who is out of network. Make certain you get something in writing if they do approve it.
Good Luck!
