Would I qualify, if so for bariatric surgery in FL?

Question
QUESTION: I've read through what I could understand of floridas medicare website/s. I can't seem to figure out whether I'm 100% not eligible or not. I've learned of quite a few people having bariatric surgeries (weight loss) covered by medicare, but not in my state.

From what I understand, Florida is kind of strict on only covering families with children and elderlies with SSI. Is this true? I am really in a need for bariatric surgery but cannot afford insurance. Diabetes runs in my family on my mothers side, she was just diagnosed. I weigh 360 lbs at age 24, so I really think this would be a good investment but I can't seem to find where to get coverage since I am a horribly low income individual (not a family).

Is there any information and/or advice you can give on medicare in FL if I would be wasting my time trying to get covered?

ANSWER: Hi Sarah

The person to ask is the doctor.  He is the one that assigns the claim payment code.  If he says it is medically necessary, it is covered.  If you have Medicare, he has too tell you if it is not covered. If you are on Medicaid, check it out with your case worker.

Lots of luck.

John

QUESTION: But do you know if Medicaid only covers families and elderlies or is there some chance I might be covered if I don't have children and I'm only 24?

Answer
Hi again

Go to the State web site=====keyword and click on MEDICAID=====find and scroll on Programs.

Also go on Benefits.org======enter your information====click on continue====and it will screen about 400 programs to see what you might be eligible for.
