speech and language communication disorders

Question
I have a 12 yr old son with autism that is starting private speech and language therapy with an SLP to improve both his oral and written communication. She does not participate with insurances and I will have to self submit. I need to find ICD codes that correspond to the treatment being rendered. In my experience, insurance companies will not provide codes or the description of them, they will only tell the subscriber if a code is covered or not. So I have to come up with the codes. My SLP did not do a speech eval because one was done at school so she has no actual diagnosis (other than autism,) until she works with him for a while. In the meantime, I want to start submitting to get charges covered.

Can you help by providing me with some relevent codes and I can check with my insurance to see if they are covered codes. It will be helpful to work with ones that are commonly used and commonly covered. Thank you.

Answer
Hi Vivian!

I can not give you codes -- the therapist would have to.  Codes are specific to treatment given so the only person who will have the code is the therapist.  You can not guess codes, it does not work that way.

Call the therapist and ask them directly.  They are required to use ICD codes when billing any insurance company.  Even if your son has not had treatment yet I am sure they will be familiar with the codes to use.
