medigap, supplemential insurance

Question
Hi John, I am 67, a veteran and in good health in  Caldwell Co.,NC. I realize that I missed the chance to buy an "issue age" policy. Are there any providers that will issue a issue age policy? If the answer is no then I need to find a company that will cover all expenses not covered in Medicare part a and b. I have looked at Blue Cross high deductible plan f. I am so overwhelmed. Can you help?

Answer
Hi Bill

I usually take about an hour when I counsel someone in person to get the best answer to this question.  So I am referring you to  my counterpart in NC.  Call the SHIP number at 1-800-443-9354 and you will reach the office nearest you.  Call and request a counselor to check your situation out and give you your best options,This is he phone number listed on the back cover of the Medicare and You 2010 you received in October.  In the back of that manual is a list of the Medicare Advantage Plans in your area.

You can go on the Medicare, gov====go to find medigap plans in your area====click on Medigap plans and check the list for issue age providers if that is what you want, but one price for all is often better.

Since you are in good health you can usually save money with an Advantage plan, if you like them.  But, if you see the doctor very often, the co=pays get to you.

If you are a retired Vet, then you should be in Tricare for Life, best coverage in the Nation(from a 23 years in service vet)  Also go to the VA web site===on home page check the list and click on Pensions===download the pension site===if it applies to you contact a VFW service officer and get an ap in.

When you talk with the SHIP counselor, see if you are eligible for extra help with prescriptions, and also if eligible for the Medicare Savings program.

Hope this helps.

John
