Question
My brother who is 50 , lives in Statesboro Ga. was put on Medicaid last year. He has cirrhosis of the liver, and his liver and pancreas is shutting down. On Dec. 1, 09 he was dropped from Medicaid. He has been trying to get a reveiw of his case, but the manager at his local is refusing to see him -telling him that he no longer is eligible, and to not bother returning because he will not be seen. I do not live in the area, my elderly parents do-yet he is attempting to deal with it. Nothing has changed, except for his health getting worse, so none of us,including his doctors understand why he was dropped. He has gotten the run around with people he calls, we would just like to know who we can contact that will actually do something. Thanks
Answer
Hi Julie
I am in Mi and the regulations are quite different than in GA. So I am referring you to my counterpart in GA That is the SHIP program at 1-800-669-8387. Have them call from inside GA and they will get the local SHIP office. Request to speak with a counselor and they can help in his situations.
Usually the letter will have the directions on making an appeal. That is usually done by requesting an appeal within 30 days.
If they refuse to take the appeal. send it by e-mail with a CC to the State Medicaid office. This leaves a paper trail that the local office cannot ignore.
Most states have a state elder lay office set up that could assist him, Have them contact that office.
Might also contact the Area Agency on Aging office in that area. They usually have legal assistance through their programs.
Hope this helps.
John
