Question
My mom just recently was insured, effective mid October. She went into the hospital October 30th with major stomach pain and after spending a week there, she was diagnosed with stage 3 cervical cancer. Now that we are looking to the chemo and radiation necessary to save her life, her insurance is claiming that she had a pre-existing condition even though she didn't know she had it and was never diagnosed prior to coverage, and they won't cover her for the treatment. We are in California. PLEASE HELP!
Answer
Hi Crystal!
You need to read your mom's policy to see what they deem as pre existing since each policy is different. Even though your mom just found out she had the cancer she probably has had it for many months thus existing prior to her coverage.
Sometimes there are clauses and exceptions in policies so look further into her policy.
If not luck with the insurance carrier you can perhaps call the Insurance Commissioner in your state to see if they will help. I know alot of states are trying to get insurance companies not to have pre existing clauses.
Good Luck!
