"Straight Medicaid" in Michigan

Question
Dear Mr. John Pedit

My children are currently covered by my employers health insurance (Priority Heath) and they also have a MIHealth Card. When I spoke with a Michigan Enrolls employee, 2 years ago, I was told we have what is called "Straight Medicaid" because we have both employer coverage and Medicaid. My income level qualified them for this and my raises haven't been very big if I got one at all. So my income hasn't change enough to stop Medicaid.

My question is why does the Blue Cross representative (whom my employer is switching to at the start of 2010) say we (the kids actually) are not allowed to have both Medicaid and Blue Cross coverage at the same time? I was also wondering, do we need to notify our insurance company that we have Medicaid for our kids?

Could you please point me in the right direction for some sort of written proof that I can provide Blue Cross to show I can have both employer based insurance and Medicaid. I'm expecting a fight over this with my employer Human Resource Rep. and Blue Cross.

Thank You for Your time and expertise.

Answer
Hi Rob

The decision about eligibility for Medicaid has nothing to do with BC,  It is entirely with the DHS unit of Medicaid.  Medicaid makes the Medicaid decisions. The problem seems to be that BC will not cover a Medicaid person in their coverage plan at the company.

Therefore, call 1-800-803-7174, and request to speak with a MMAP counselor that is a Medicaid specialist.  They will meet with you, read any information BC has given you and assist you in getting facts necessary to clear up the matter.
