Medicare part B

Question
just because you are 65 years old, do you have to enroll in Medicare part B?  EGHP is in place 100% coverage, has part A, no health issues at this time.  will there be a penalty involved if this person enrolls in part B during open enrollment??  thanks

Answer
Hi Heather

You just received a copy of Medicare and You 2010 in the mail from Medicare.  The information is in there.  If you have further question, call the number on the back cover of the manual.

Basically, if you or your spouse are still working and you are on the company insurance plan, and the plan is creditable coverage, you do not need Part B.  The company plan is primary.

If that is not  the case, then you need part B.  If you do not get it, then there is a 10% penalty for each 12 months you do not have it.  So if you have gone past 12 months without part B,  the getting it in an open enrollment period will not stop the penalty.
