Private Insurance and Medicade

Question
I will turn 65 in 4 months and need to decide whether to keep two private insurance policies that will change to advantage plans I guess when I am 65 along with Medicare.  I require mental health benefits and prefer the agency covered by the Federal Employee plan but prefer the drug benefits from a previous employer plan.  Should I keep both if I can afford them?  Will I be over insured and get no benefits from Medicare?  The FEHB plan is more stable I think, the other is a public utility company.  HELP!

Answer
Hi Janalee

This is way too complicated to be done by e-mail, so I am going to refer you to my counterpart in your State,  Go to the local Social Security office and get a copy of MEDICARE AND YOU 2010.  It will answer many of your questions.  Read it thoroughly and then call the number located in the center of the back cover.  Call them and request a counselor that is familiar with FEHB.  Make an appointment and request them to do a Benefits check, and also a computer check on your options.  This should take about an hour,  Then you can enroll in Medicare and if you decide to do so, enroll in any new plan changes you decide to make, or keep what you.  Because of your several options, you do not want to over insure.
